on the 31st of March, this day of our Lord 2019, a certain person conversed with a certain other person in order that one of them would supply answers to questions the other one had. and here is the result. what is this all about? why, the 2003 emanation entitled "The Birds Must Be Eliminated." www.discogs.com/The-Hafler-Trio-The-Birds-Must-Be-Eliminated/release/191115

@fleeeawig: So, explanationism, wow! I think everything you said about the sort of pitfalls of explaining these things was completely true. I mean, it was incredibly gratifying to hear all of that stuff explained-and there was so much more there than I had even imagined, all these specific ideas and references from Yves Klein. I've so often encountered work of yours and been puzzled by a million cryptic references-but it's absolutely true that this is one of the ways that the hook gets in you, that gets you to spend the time with a piece and actually let what is there emerge. Were I given all that stuff up front, I think it would be impossible for me to give the time that the pieces really need, to actually experience the substance of them-what all those references and connections are actually there to point to, if you are picking them up. And I really have had that experience several times of saying "oh THAT'S what that referred to!" And then understanding that the reference may also be an interesting source to investigate, since it is connected to what was going on in your piece. So there's this real paradox-like, it really added to my understand of The Birds... to know what all this came out of. But had I known that beforehand, I doubt I would've given it the attention it required to just have that raw, pure experience in my consciousness of originally listening to it. Reading the answers in the back of the book is never very satisfying BUT-your explanation was extremely compelling, too. So what were left with is this desiring to know, to get the "answers", while knowing that actually getting them will have to mean they will sort of dissolve in our hands. [elided] A lot of food for thought

@h3o: and indeed, if all this was upfront, it would destroy it / make it unlikely that effectiveness could be effected, er, yes...and it really is like a magic trick; people always ask "how did you DO that?" and if they find out, something is very definitley lost but hopefully these fits of "explanationism" are valid, and of course, these records are no longer available, so the people who really relate to them are people who have been sitting with the artefact for some time.

@fleeeawig: But perhaps another of the interesting effects is, having heard this one discussion of this one piece, a listener knows there is that kind of substance behind basically all the works. So maybe just getting to hear about _some_ of it is also a way of then goading the listener on, like... "ok, now you can really see there's all this stuff
there and I'm not just bullshitting you...so when you listen to the rest you'll know that something similar, similar ideas and intentions are really in there for you to find."
